Life skills development is about doing more for yourself, at your own pace. Our workers support people in Williams Landing, Melton, Caroline Springs and the rest of Melbourne’s west to learn and practise the skills they want for a more independent life.
Skills people often work on
- Cooking: planning a simple meal, shopping for it, using the stove and oven safely, cleaning up.
- Budgeting and money: knowing what bills are due, using a bank card, keeping track of spending.
- Getting around: using buses and trains, reading a timetable, planning a route. See transport and travel assistance.
- Daily routines: getting up on time, keeping appointments, using a calendar or phone reminders.
- Looking after a home: laundry, cleaning schedules, what to do when something breaks.
- Social and communication skills: making phone calls, speaking up at appointments, meeting new people.
How we teach
We start with what you want to be able to do, not a checklist. Your worker shows you, does it with you, then steps back and lets you lead, with lots of practice in between. We use pictures, written steps or phone reminders if they help.
Progress is reviewed with you regularly, and with your family or support coordinator if you want them involved. When you have got a skill, we move on to the next one.
Getting started
Call (03) 9967 9524 or send an enquiry. Tell us which skills you would like to build, and we will suggest how often to meet and who would be a good fit.
